Toward Reliable Controller Placements in Software-Defined Network Using Constrained Multi-Objective Optimization Technique

Abstract: Software Defined Networking (SDN) makes it easy to control and manage the network due to a centralized control plane. However, this centralization also limits the scalability of SDN. To address this scalability issue, multiple controllers are deployed in the SDN. Placing multiple controllers poses several challenges, one of which is to find optimum locations for the placement of multiple controllers. The existing approaches for controller placement in a multiple-controller SDN environment overlook many aspects… Show more

“…The existing controller placement strategies in a multi‐controller SDN environment overlook a number of factors, including the path reliability for S2C and C2C connection and the adoption of an efficient ML algorithm 65 . Researchers presented the Constrained Multi‐Objective Heuristic Placement Approach (CMOHPA) technique based on the criteria of greatest S2C path reliability, limited S2C hop count, maximum C2C reliability, load‐balancing between the controllers, and a limited number of controllers to find the most suitable position of controllers.…”

“…Multiple controllers provide benefits such as increased control, scalability, flexibility, and network visibility, as well as improved network performance and reliability [40]. The use of multiple controllers can also allow for better network abstraction, decision-making, and efficient traffic management, and can provide different tenants with more control over their network [41]. In summary, the following are the most important merits of multi-SDN controllers:…”

“…Constrained multi-objective optimization problems (CMOPs) [ 1 , 2 ] are prevalent in many real-world applications, such as software-defined networks [ 3 ], path planning [ 4 ], wireless sensors deployment [ 5 ], and real-time systems [ 6 ]. Generally, a minimized CMOP can be defined as Equation ( 1 ).…”
