Toward effective structural identification of medium-rise building structures

Abstract: Structural Identification (St-Id) is the process of constructing and calibrating a physics-based model based on the measured static and/or dynamic response of the structure. Over the last two decades, although the St-Id methods have become increasingly popular amongst civilstructural engineering communities, most complete and successful applications are often found with flexible structures such as long-span bridges and towers. Very few comprehensive studies were reported on building structures, especially thos… Show more

“…An extensive study has been conducted on the P block structure to study these phenomena and to select sufficiently detailed and suitably conceptualized initial FE model for the model updating process. 27,28 Only selected information is presented in this article to serve the purpose of completeness and to highlight the importance of initial FE modelling in the context of structural deterioration assessment.…”

“…An extensive study has been conducted on the P block structure to study these phenomena and to select sufficiently detailed and suitably conceptualized initial FE model for the model updating process. 27,28 Only selected information is presented in this article to serve the purpose of completeness and to highlight the importance of initial FE modelling in the context of structural deterioration assessment. First, a simple FE model developed based purely on the design drawings was trialled, but the error in the natural frequencies between the FE model and the experiment was close to 50%, which is by no means acceptable for model updating.…”

“…The accelerometers can measure lateral and vertical accelerations depending on the orientation of the accelerometers attached to the target structure. The acceleration data is acquired by a centralised National Instruments (NI) data acquisition system which requires (a) NI DAQ 9172 chassis, (b) NI 9234 dynamic signal acquisition modules, and (c) an in-house LabVIEW based data acquisition program to enable precise hardware-based synchronisation and data analysis (Nguyen et al, 2017). The sensors incorporate the quartz element, which enhances the sensitivity of compressive and shear loads.…”

“…Known as the testbed of Australia's first-ever long-term full-scale SHM system, P block building has interestingly hosted the 8th International Conference on Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructures (SHMII-8) on the first time this prestigious conference in the SHM field was organised in Oceania (229). More details regarding the P-block are presented in (230,231) Figure 8 P-block building(227)…”
