Summary Modern power system requires optimally coordinated operation between transmission and distribution systems due to large‐scale integration of distributed energy resources (DERs). Commonly, transmission system operator (TSO) solves its own cost optimization problem and evaluates required targets for each distribution system operator (DSO). Thus, TSO problem becomes more complex and highly scaled with increase in number of connected distribution systems, which requires more computational time and resources. Therefore, this paper proposed a method to reduce computational burden on TSO and solve coordinated security constrained unit commitment (C‐SCUC) problem by involving a coordinator in upper level hierarchy. Coordinator is required to solve system‐wide problem to adjust targets for transmission system (TS) and all distribution systems (DS). Besides, TSO and DSO only need to solve their own cost optimization problems. In this paper, we have proposed analytical target cascading (ATC) along with hybridized particle swarm optimization with differential evolution (PSO‐DE) for solving increased complexity of the coordinated problem. ATC provides coordination between transmission and distribution sections of power system while hybrid PSO‐DE provides better accuracy of optimization in ATC layers. For evaluation of efficacy of proposed method, this paper has taken IEEE 118‐bus system as TS and IEEE 33‐bus system as DS. Results has depicted that proposed method could help TSO in reducing computational resources and improving computational time.

The high penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) introduces considerable challenges to the operation of distribution grids. To facilitate the management of DERs, distribution grids are divided into multiple cells. However, for cell coordination, existing methods require extensive time to solve the operation constraints. To accelerate the speed of solving problems, this paper proposes a decentralized optimization method for cells based on the steady-state security region (SSSR) in power injection spaces. Based on the SSSR, this paper decomposes the entire optimal problem model into several subproblems. Meanwhile, the node voltage constraints and line current constraints of the optimization model both become a set of inequalities of linear combinations of variables and the variables in the objective and constraints are identical for each cell. Furthermore, a decentralized optimization model is established for the minimum power loss, and coordination among cells is realized by Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. Therefore, the entire optimization process requires less time and few iterations. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, simulations for a modified PG&E 69-bus distribution grid are performed in the MATLAB environment.The optimization results reveal that the average calculation time is improved to 2.84 seconds compared to 27.32 seconds for the centralized method and 88.9 seconds for the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), and the number of iterations is reduced to 3 compared to 35 with ADMM.

This paper presents a novel distributed method for dynamic economic dispatch (DED) problems with cubic fuel cost functions based on the dual alternating direction method of multipliers (D-ADMM) and interior point method (IPM). This scheme enables us to combine the excellent parallelism of ADMM with the superior convergence properties of the IPM. The idea adopted by the proposed algorithm is that the outer-loop uses ADMM decoupling, and the inner-loop uses IPM to solve the cubic polynomial optimization subproblems. When the unit set is divided into multiple partitions, D-ADMM also has the nice central processing unit (CPU) runtime as the well as the number of iterations. In addition, we use a Decoupling-Decomposition-Backtracking and parallel improved multiple centrality corrections decoupling interior point method (DDB-PIMCCD) to solve the aforementioned larger subproblems more efficiently. Finally, the numerical results, in both serial and parallel modes, on a set of 22 DED cases with the range of units from 8 to 1000 units show that the proposed method is very promising for large scale distributed DED problems. Because it can keep the unit information about each subset in secret to suit the market environment and can obtain high-quality solutions with reasonable time.
