Toward development of a testbed for sustainable manufacturing

Abstract: A growing number of manufacturing companies are treating sustainability as a strategic objective that will increase both their global competitiveness and their market share. To implement this objective, these companies must first assess, and then evaluate, their current sustainability performance. Assessments and evaluations are carried out by choosing among a variety of existing sustainability metrics, assessment tools, and related standards. To help companies make the best choice, the National Institute of S… Show more

“…Some examples of the papers' characterisation: Larreina et al (2013), Blümel (2013), and Lee et al (2015) are examples of the links between 'Manufacturing Technologies' and 'Vertical and Horizontal value chains', 'Product and Service Offerings' and 'Business models', respectively. Miranda et al (2017) and Severengiz et al (2015) represent the links between Product Lifecycles and 'Product and Service Offerings' and 'Business models'.…”

“…It is one of the emerging trends in global manufacturing industries [52,53]. This concept makes organizations more competitive by reducing costs, increasing profitability [54], creating clean processes and using renewable energy [55]. Thus, these SM related themes have strong relationships with I4.0, which has as one of its main objectives to promote more sustainable production [56].…”

“…So in CMfg, both concept of “integration of distributed resources for one task” and “distribution of integrated resources as a services” are reflected, and the many-to-many service model is achieved. In addition, CMfg also involves the development of sustainable manufacturing (Lee et al, 2015), environmentally friendly manufacturing (Kim et al, 2013), networked manufacturing (Viktor et al, 2008), manufacturing grid (Sanjay et al, 2008), cloud computing (Bala and Chana, 2015), and so on. CMfg also has its own life cycle with several phases: the definition of manufacturing resource or capability, the provision of manufacturing resource or capability, the ordering of manufacturing task, manufacturing and distribution, and the disposal of manufacturing task (Breiter and Behrendt, 2009).…”
