Toward context-aware computing: experiences and lessons

Abstract: T he effects of Moore's law are apparent everywhere: Chip density, processor speed, memory cost, disk capacity, and network bandwidth are improving relentlessly. As computing costs plummet, a resource that we have ignored until now becomes the limiting factor in computer systems-user attention, namely a person's ability to focus on his or her primary task.Distractions occur especially in mobile environments, because walking, driving, or other real-world interactions often preoccupy the user. A pervasivecomputi… Show more

“…Among them one that has attracted a lot of attention is Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS). An ITS is a computer system that aims to provide immediate and customized instruction and feedback to the learners without intervention by a human tutor [40]. The first major contribution in this area has been the work of Johnson [41] in which he constructed a authoring environment for building ITS for technical training for IBM-AT class of computers.…”

“…Suppose the MERGE_LEVEL is set to be 2. Two cloud graphs c 1 Contrast to the cloud graph splitting procedure, the cloud graph merge procedure can be invoked when certain thresholds of cloud clusters have been reached. When graphs are merged, there will be opportunities to share resources which are not feasible because related resources may be located in disconnected cloud graphs.…”

“…Lee et al [21] propose to use a smart space middleware to hide the complexity involved in context-aware and automated service composition. Anhalt et al [1] outline a general solution to support contextual awareness. Our previous work [24] discusses the context-awareness of cloud computing by comparing the key characteristics of cloud computing with pervasive computing and services computing [30].…”
