Toward community food security through transdisciplinary action research

Abstract: To solve the world's most complex problems, research is increasingly moving toward more transdisciplinary endeavors. While a lot of important work has explored the characteristics, challenges, opportunities, and operationalization of transdisciplinary research, much less is known about the circumstances that either facilitate or hinder the research process, particularly from the perspectives of graduate students who often participate in them. In this paper, we aim to address this gap by contributing our own ex… Show more

“…The short-term outcome of increased capacity included recruitment of postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows from partner countries. These trainees are actively engaged in the population survey and work jointly with partners, which eventually will equip them with practical research experience and skills [ 21 ]. The experiences and skills could be in designing stand-alone surveys, working within a group of various collaborators, seeing the ups and downs in field surveys, acquiring technical know-how of survey instruments and tools, and developing analysis, reporting, and writing skills.…”

“…One example of how coproduction of place can shape a researcher's approach to urban environmental change is illustrated in Lachmund's (2013) study of the origin and significance of Berlin's public green spaces. His work investigates how Berlin's "natural" spaces were a distinctly hybrid or coproduction of science, politics, and nature.…”

“…Coproduction of knowledge is not just "better" information transfer, or even comprehensive integration across all relevant disciplines. Instead, coproduction of knowledge integrates only what the situation and the community requires for action (Lam et al 2019). The partners must together select what works for the group and the problem they are addressing.…”

“…The variety of challenges, institutional resources and aims make it difficult to foresee specific outcomes of TDR in alimentation 54,59 . However, empirical evidence shows that TDR approaches provide a broader context for disciplinary research, inspired collaborations, innovative methodologies for integrating knowledge, transformative learning of researchers, enriched educational experiences by students, and specific community actions that induce change in people's livelihoods 48,60,61 . This approach may conceivably lead to the establishment of entirely new multidisciplinary areas of scientific investigation, e.g.…”
