In this paper, an ultra-wideband active phase shifter circuit structure based on GaAs pHEMT process is adopted to design a 180° phase shifting unit for a 4~18GHz ultra-wideband active CNC phase shifter. The design uses the topology of the active Balun circuit combined with the SPDT switch. The active Balun structure widens the operating band while compensating for the low-frequency insertion loss difference. The design also optimizes the insertion loss and area of the phase shifter by improving the switching circuit. Simulation results show that the 180° active phase shifter unit has an insertion loss range of 3.33 to 5.4 dB, amplitude fluctuation of each state is less than 1.5 dB, phase shift accuracy is 180±2.5°, input, and output return loss is less than 10 dB, and chip area is 1.9 mm*1.0 mm.

A novel approach for the practical realization of the feeding lines in connected array of slots is presented. The proposed feed concept is based on a Parallel Plate Waveguide (PPW) structure and allows to simplify the unit cell design. When compared to the typical integrated coaxial feed, the PPW-based feeding structure can reduce the cost and complexity of the array, by resulting in a lower number of metal layers and by allowing for large diameter vias. Two examples of unit cell design, based on this new feed concept, are presented: one consists in a singlepolarized array of connected slot, covering the band from 70 GHz to 140 GHz; another example is referring to a single-and dual-polarized connected slot array covering the 2-8 GHz range.

A dual-band phased array design in K-band is presented. The key features of the array include dual-band performance with large frequency ratio, good sub-band bandwidths, low-profile electrical dimensions of the array element and scanning capability up to a maximum of 50 o and 30 o at the low and high frequency bands respectively. An experimental linear 1 × 7 array prototype has been fabricated and its performance verified, with good agreement between the results of the full-wave simulations and measurements.
