Toward a new generation of effective problem solvers and project-oriented applied ecologists

Abstract: Abstract. In an era of environmental crises, conservation and management strategies need a new generation of applied ecologists. Here, we stimulate the next-generation applied ecologists to acquire a pragmatic mentality of problems solvers in real contexts, using the wide arsenal of concepts, approaches and techniques available in the project management (PM) arena using a road map based on the main steps of conservation project cycle. The acquisition of the conceptual and operational framework of PM can allow … Show more

“…Local communities, ethnic minorities and local "wise people" (i.e., indigenous communities that often own unique knowledge about ecosystems) play a central role in the future of ecosystems [61][62][63]. Local "wise people" will be actively involved in managing and protecting community biodiversity [64]. In Xishuangbanna, large areas of tropical rainforest have been replaced by rubber forests with high economic value, forming a contiguous "green desert", which has seriously affected the services and functions of the local ecosystem [65].…”

“…From the point of view of the “planners”, it has been highlighted that ENs can represent a useful planning tool that regulates land use destinations (Jongman & Pungetti, 2004). However, yet Boitani et al (2007) underlined how an EN plan, in addition to being designed, should be tested to verify its effectiveness: it should be treated as a tool relevant to conservation biology as a science, and therefore as a true CC project equipped with objectives, actions, outputs, and outcomes that should be monitored through appropriate indicators (Battisti, 2018; Battisti et al, 2020; Hockings, 2006). These indicators should have characteristics of HF‐sensitivity but also be relatively common so as to show trends of variation following the project (Amici & Battisti, 2009; Battisti & Luiselli, 2011).…”

“…(2) The lack of effective management is a crucial factor that has led to the current situation. It is necessary to develop an effective monitoring system and put this into practice [1,69]. In addition, management activities should be scientific and reasonable [1,7,8].…”
