Toward a More Secure HRIS: The Role of HCI and Unconscious Behavior

Abstract: Abstract:By design, human resource information systems (HRIS) hold confidential and sensitive information. Therefore, one needs to ensure the security of these systems from unintentional mistakes that may compromise such information. Current systems design and training procedures of HRIS unintentionally help reinforce unsecure behaviors that result in non-malicious security breaches. Measures to improve security through design and training may only occur by breaking the use/impact cycle that individuals have h… Show more

“…Yet, a high percentage of cybersecurity breaches are caused by unconscious user behavior, which is immune to all appeals that rely on conscious mind attention and control. Similar to other recent work in IS [6], we propose adapting the Martin-Morich model of consumer behavior (shown in Figure 1) to develop an improved approach to cybersecurity.…”

“…Growing threats of security breaches involving organizational resources are evident as both careless errors and conscious malicious attacks from current and former employees have been seen (http://globalhr.org, 2016) or they involve cyber criminals who look to exploit wherever a community is weak. Further, digital Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) have been targeted for identity theft and are a mounting cybersecurity risk both from within and outside the organization (Zafar, Randolph & Martin, ). As the webbed environment expands, the organization must learn, adapt, and decide who and what is friend or foe in the system.…”
