Toward a model-free feedback control synthesis for treating acute inflammation

Abstract: An effective and patient-specific feedback control synthesis for inflammation resolution is still an ongoing research area. A strategy consisting of manipulating a pro and anti-inflammatory mediator is considered here as used in some promising model-based control studies. These earlier studies, unfortunately, suffer from the difficultly of calibration due to the heterogeneity of individual patient responses even under similar initial conditions. We exploit a new model-free control approach and its correspondin… Show more

“…The indisputable practical successes (see [2], [11], the numerous references therein, and [3], [6], [12], [13], [14], [39], [47], [50], [53], [54], [74], [58], [59], [66], [71], [83], [84]) of model-free control [29] explains why it has already been summarized recently many times: [5], [8], [11], [30], [50]. It will therefore not be repeated here.…”

“…See, e.g., [Bonnabel & Clayes (2020)] for tower cranes. 2) Besides being useful in concrete case-studies (see, e.g., [Amasyali et al (2020)], [Park et al (2021)], [Park & Olama (2021)] for energy management), model-free control in the sense of [Fliess & Join (2013)] has already been illustrated by drug injections for some type-1 diabetes [MohammadRidha et al (2018)] and for inflammation [Bara et al (2018)]. Note that the terminology "model-free control" has been used many times with different definitions: see, e.g., [Chareyron & Alamir (2009)] in oncology.…”

“…The literature presents some particular control algorithms that do not rely on modeling. For instance, the model-free control (MFC) approach proposed by Fliess and Join 29 has been successfully illustrated in different concrete case-studies varying from wastewater denitrification, 30 nanopositioning of piezoelectric systems 31 up to inflammation resolution in biomedical applications, 32 see also its references for additional case-study examples and supplementary information. Some research works based on MFC techniques have led to patents, such as Join et al.…”
