Toward a meaningful technology for instrumental music education: Teachers’ voice

Abstract: In musical instrument training, researchers have gradually started exploring the potential of interactive technologies supporting learning processes and teaching methods. Although numerous technological tools have been proposed to enhance instrument learning and teaching, these methods rarely find their way into daily practice and teaching routines. In this study, we report data from an online survey study administered to violin and drum kit teachers. Results reveal distinct learning profiles of novice violin … Show more

“…Furthermore, understanding the needs, preferences, and concerns of users is essential for the technology’s successful adoption and further development ( Bauer, 2014 ; Mroziak and Bowman, 2016 ; Michałko et al, 2022 ). Since musicians typically rely on auditory and visual information for communication ( Goodman, 2002 ; Biasutti et al, 2013 ), they may initially find this additional communication channel as distracting rather than beneficial.…”

“…Since musicians typically rely on auditory and visual information for communication ( Goodman, 2002 ; Biasutti et al, 2013 ), they may initially find this additional communication channel as distracting rather than beneficial. Therefore, to achieve successful technology adoption, a participatory design should be carefully implemented, encompassing various validation scenarios and intense interaction between the developers and end users at every stage of technology development ( Bobbe et al, 2021 ; Michałko et al, 2022 ). This approach will not only help shape the design of the technology to better meet users’ expectations ( Bauer, 2014 ; Mroziak and Bowman, 2016 ), but it can also help verify in a proactive way the technical effectiveness of the devices themselves.…”

“…Being primarily based on physical student–teacher interaction, this training approach requires continuous teacher supervision. Moreover, the student may be unable to correctly interpret the teacher’s verbal instructions and physical guidance, which are often offered at the end of the performance (i.e., delayed feedback) [ 7 ]. For example, after playing an exercise, the teacher might point out incorrect movements during bow changes, suggesting that the student relax their shoulder or avoid exerting unnecessary resistance or effort when changing the direction of the bow.…”

“…Instrument training is the desired changes in the field of music to improve one's technical skills for playing an instrument (Michałko et al, 2022;Uslu, 2006). Instrument education, which is one of the dimensions of music education, can be expressed as the learning process and the systematic acquisition of some skills to play the instrument, and the process of gaining aesthetic direction in knowledge, skills and behaviours (Juslin et al, 2021;Schleuter, 1997;Uludağ, 2012).…”
