Toward a Machine Learning Predictive-Oriented Approach to Complement Explanatory Modeling. An Application for Evaluating Psychopathological Traits Based on Affective Neurosciences and Phenomenology

Abstract: Dolce et al. Machine Learning to Complement Explanatory Modeling prediction accuracy of 88.5%, that is 25.6% of incorrectly classified), compared to the predictions obtained using all the original items (260 items with a prediction accuracy of 74.4%). At the same time, it reduced the redundancy of the items and eliminated those with less consistency.

“…A data-driven approach was, in essence, used to obtain the partition, combining it with a knowledge-based approach (used to define clusters). Such mixed methodology is gaining wide recognition in Psychological Research (Dolce et al, 2020).…”

“…To evaluate the construct validity of the 2-factor model structure underlying the HABS scale, the traditional explanatory modeling approach was used (Dolce, Marocco, Maldonato, & Sperandeo, 2020). Confirmatory factor analysis was performed using the robust weighted least square (WLSMV) estimator with the lavaan R package (R Core Team, 2018; Rosseel, 2012), as variable distributions were not symmetrical.…”

“…The results of a systematic review indicate that videoconferencing psychotherapy (VCP) can be feasible, clinically effective and acceptable to patients, has been used in a variety of therapeutic formats and with different subjects, is generally associated with good user satisfaction, and is found to have similar clinical outcomes to traditional face-to-face psychotherapy [10]. In the last two decades, international researches studied advantages, potentials, limitations and defects of each type of online psychological intervention and maybe what drives the professional choice is the theoreticalmethodological vision of psychic therapy according to the different theoretical orientations and types of therapy, which better than others lend themselves to this form of intervention [11].…”
