Toward a framework of integrated knowledge of terrestrial vegetation system: The role of databases of phytosociological relevés

Abstract: In this article, we consider the meaning of the phytosociological relevé of the Braun-Blanquet's approach as a source of biodiversity matrices. We stress the importance of phytosociological relevé for the integrated vegetation studies dedicated to understand the vegetation system and its ecosystem role at different hierarchical levels. We review the state of the art of building databases of the Italian vegetation under the perspective to develop a knowledge database of Italian vegetation based on formal ontolo… Show more

“…The results of the queries (by single species/localities/syntaxa/projects etc., or by a combination of them) are returned in html or text-file format, both as single relevés and tables, with tab-delimited fields that can be exported for further analysis or printed. The data can also be exported in a JUICE-compatible format (Tichý 2002, Tichý & Holt 2006 and other free or proprietary software such as TURBOVEG, VEGANA (http://biodiver.bio.ub.es/vegana/index.ht ml), MatEdit (Feoli et al 2011) and SYN-TAX (Podani 2007). Cluster analysis is also supported via web.…”

“…Plant sociological databases, that are increasingly being integrated at the European level, have a wide range of application: from the assessment of the diversity of plant communities (Feoli et al 2011), to international initiatives in nature conservation, e.g., Natura2000 (Schaminee et al 2011).…”

“…During the last 2 years, VegItaly grew both in number of stored vegetation plots and in popularity, at both the national and international scales. The citations of the database increased (Feoli et al 2011;Landucci et al 2011;Guarino et al 2012;Venanzoni et al 2012) and the project was often promoted in national and international congresses. It has been well acknowledged in Europe becoming a founding partner of the rising European Vegetation Archive (EVA; Chytrý et al 2012) and the main Southern European reference point for the creation of the European taxonomic standard list for vegetation studies named EuroSL .…”
