Toward a Developmental View of Adult Crisis: a Re-Examination of Crisis Theory

Abstract: The thesis of this article is that sudden event-related crises can produce developmental shifts as part of the normal progression of the adult life cycle. Evidence for this is available from both the crisis intervention and life-span development literatures. Observations of individuals in crisis reveals the occurrence of profound structural changes in perception and experience. However, more systematic examination of the developmental significance of such crises awaits the reworking of several traditional conc… Show more

“…That there is developmental movement over time in the use of coping strategies may not be a particularly novel revelation. Greer (1980) maintains that life crises "produce developmental shifts as part of the normal progression of the adult life cycle" (p. 17). Similarly, Aldwin, Sutton, and Lachman (1996) assert that it is "eminently reasonable to assume that, during the process of coping with stress, individuals can add to their coping repertoires and increase their sense of self-esteem and mastery" (p. 841).…”

“…Of greater import to this research are studies that highlight the growth value of suffering. Commenting on the sparsity of studies on the subject of the self-enhancement value of crisis, Greer (1980) explored the developmental versus the pathogenic course of life crisis. Jaffe (1985) focussed on the creative restructuring of the self that may follow the painful and disconfirming personal crisis of illness or other extreme personal trauma.…”

“…For this reason, re-parenting is often regarded as an "accidental crisis" that is not part of typical development (Greer, 1980;Landry-Meyer & Newman, 2004). The stress that grandparents experience as a result of this crisis typically arises from situational factors that are exacerbated by off-time pressures and loss of opportunity for personal growth (Fuller-Thompson, Minkler, & Driver, 1997;Crowther & Rodriguez, 2003).…”
