Abstract:This entry places the contemporary field of anthropology of tourism, travel, and pilgrimage (ATTP) within a tradition, established for two millennia, concerned with the relation between travel and social thought. It argues that this tradition played a substantial role in the emergence of social anthropology as a discipline and that, as a subfield of the discipline, ATTP today is making significant contributions to anthropological theory.
