“…The substance use disorder (SUD) epidemic has led to increased infectious complications of injection drug use (IDU) [6], including serious bacterial infections (SBIs), such as skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI), bacteremia or sepsis, osteomyelitis, infectious endocarditis, as well as hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and HIV infections [7][8][9][10]. IDUrelated SBIs are associated with high morbidity and mortality [11] and may be an important marker of SUD severity; those with an IDU-related SBI experienced a more than fifty-fold increase in overdose death compared to those without an IDU-related SBI [12]. Hospitalization rates and hospitalization costs associated with IDU-related SBIs are important measures of the social, economic, and public health burden of IDU.…”

“…Further, hospitalization is a high-risk touchpoint after which people with opioid use disorder 83 are at increased risk for overdose and death. A recent study in Massachusetts found that hospitalization 84 for injection-related infection was associated with a 54-fold increase in mortality, and that MOUD can 85 mitigate this risk (Larochelle et al, 2019). Medication, combined with psychosocial interventions, 86 comprise first line treatment for moderate to severe alcohol use disorder.…”

“…Although we used an all-available lookback window to exclude patients with a prior overdose, do not know whether the patients in our study population had a diagnosed overdose prior to October 2011. Another limitation is that the list of candidate predictors does not encompass all of the important risk factors of overdose, such as behavioral health and criminal justice variables that are poorly captured in claims data [ 42 ]. Predictors were also measured during the previous 3–6 months, and we did not assess whether a longer covariate assessment period could have resulted in better prediction.…”
