Totally endoscopic atrial septal repair in adults with computer-enhanced telemanipulation

Abstract: Totally endoscopic atrial septal repair is a feasible and safe procedure with good clinical results and excellent cosmetic outcomes. It may be considered as perfect adjunct to interventional treatment options. Further studies with larger cohorts and randomized trials are necessary to document potential benefits. Evolution in robotic technology and refinement of procedural flow may shorten procedural time and decrease costs.

“…TTS has shown some encouraging results, as in all reported cases the operation could be performed safely, and with no need for conversion to full sternotomy or minithoracotomy. [16][17][18][19] The current study provides details of early clinical results including the functional and cosmetic results from totally thoracoscopic approach and RALT in comparison.…”

“…1,5,6 Totally endoscopic surgery or surgery using only mini-thoracotomies minimizes the invasiveness of the procedure, thus reducing the pain and risk of postoperative infection as well as ensuring an excellent cosmetic outcome (Fig. 3), rapid postoperative recovery, early return to normal life, and a short hospital stay.…”

“…A balloon was used to occlude the aorta if calcification of the ascending aorta was observed during preoperative testing. 1,2 The right atrium was incised, and an ostium secundum ASD was confi rmed in all patients (mean diameter = 21 ± 3 mm; Fig. 1).…”

“…Given the relative technical simplicity of the intracardiac repair, one can often approach this lesion with an extremely small right chest incision. In fact, methods of performing this operation in a totally endoscopic manner, without any access incision, have been developed (16,17).…”
