Totally blind APP channel estimation with higher order modulation schemes

Abstract: Abstract-A new two-dimensional blind channel estimation scheme for coherent detection of OFDM signals in a mobile environment is presented. The channel estimation is based on the A Posteriori Probability (APP) calculation algorithm. The time-variant channel transfer function is completely recovered without phase ambiguity with no need for any pilot or reference symbols. The two-dimensional channel estimation is performed by applying a concatenation of two one-dimensional APP estimators for frequency and time d… Show more

“…Necker and Stuber proposed to use dual MPSK constellations for TBCE [7], but the channel can not vary too fast in the frequency domain. Necker and Sanzi tried a particular 8-ary minimum-error (8MiniErr) constellation [8], but no attempt was made for the general case. TBCE for Space-Time Block Coding systems by dual-constellation was rigorously discussed in [9], [10], but still only MPSK constellation was covered.…”

“…The main objective of these papers was to reduce the complexity of the inner decoder. Two main methods can be distinguished: first an explicit estimation of the channel phase followed by coherent detection, see [19,20], and for the 2D-case [24][25][26], or secondly by directly calculating the a posteriori probabilities of the information symbols as in [17,18,22], and for the 2D case [27][28][29].…”

“…In order to achieve this target the channel code has to satisfy an asymmetry condition. In [5], [6] asymmetric signaling constellations were utilized for phase correct blind estimation techniques. However, code asymmetry does not necessarily involve symbol asymmetry.…”
