Total Wrist Replacement: A Retrospective Comparative Study

Abstract: Total wrist arthroplasty (TWA) can provide the motion, strength, and the stability needed to perform activities of daily living. 1-3 Clinical series reporting on total wrist arthroplasty, however, have been limited. Problems related to implant loosening and instability have limited the clinical application of TWA. [3][4][5][6][7] Wrist arthroplasty provides the potential of improving hand strength secondary to maximizing resting muscle tension as well as better positioning the hand for functional use in daily … Show more

“…TWA has been associated with a relatively high rate of complications, with high rates of distal component loosening and joint instability with various types of implants [1,4,6,7,[9][10][11][14][15][16]. Although some studies mention the possibility of fracture associated with TWA [1, 2, 5, 6, 11], to our knowledge, nothing has been reported specifically regarding fractures related to this procedure.…”
