Total virome characterizations of game animals in China reveals a spectrum of emerging viral pathogens

Abstract: Game animals are wildlife species often traded and consumed as exotic food, and are potential reservoirs for SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. We performed a meta-transcriptomic analysis of 1725 game animals, representing 16 species and five mammalian orders, sampled across China. From this we identified 71 mammalian viruses, with 45 described for the first time. Eighteen viruses were considered as potentially high risk to humans and domestic animals. Civets (Paguma larvata) carried the highest number of potentially hi… Show more

“…At the same time, the Wild Animal Disease Surveillance Program also focuses on the early detection of "new" and "emerging" diseases outside the system's targets, especially some of them zoonoses that may be critically harmful (RodrÍGuez-Prieto et al 2015). First, efficient testing tools and facilities are needed for existing or potential pathogens in animals, especially unknown pathogens, so that they can be used to trace the origins of specific epidemics and to conduct risk assessments of the most likely sources of future outbreaks (He et al 2021). In particular, rigorous scientific tests are needed to determine the pathology of pathogens on threatened hosts at the individual level and the impact of potential outbreaks on the population or species level (Lafferty & Holt 2003;Gormley et al 2018).…”

Over the last few decades, he has expressed his support for gain-of-function research on numerous occasions.…”
