Total Talar Replacement With Custom-Made Vitallium Prosthesis for Talar Avascular Necrosis

Abstract: Background: The current study investigated the application of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology in the treatment of talar avascular necrosis (TAN). Custom-made Vitallium talar prostheses were designed and generated via 3D printing. We hypothesized that these talar prostheses would facilitate more stable positioning, better ergonomically fit the ankle joint surfaces, and promote favorable long-term prognoses.Material and Methods: Computed tomography scans of both ankle joints were acquired from three p… Show more

“…18,19 Vitallium has also been used in other orthopaedic surgeries, such as radial head replacement, spinal fusion, and talar replacement. [20][21][22] In conclusion, although Vitallium mold arthroplasty was inferior to total hip arthroplasty in survival rate and functional outcome, it did provide an excellent long-term function of the hip joint.…”

“…Although Vitallium mold arthroplasty has been eliminated, the Thompson and Austin‐Moore hemiarthroplasties with Vitallium prostheses are still performed for femoral neck fractures in some countries and show satisfactory results 18,19 . Vitallium has also been used in other orthopaedic surgeries, such as radial head replacement, spinal fusion, and talar replacement 20–22 …”

“…Most commonly, this involves a modified Brostrom procedure to address chronic lateral ankle instability at the time of the TAR procedure. As a corollary, it should also be critical to achieve ligamentous stability for TTR and TATTR constructs to optimize outcomes [12][13][14][15][16] .…”
