“…Previous studies on T lymphocytes in lung cancer and in smoking have pro duced conflicting results showing T cells as either increased or unchanged [3,4,[21][22][23][24]. We found the percentage of OKT3+ cells increased in the deep lung but not in blood, of patients with pulmon ary neoplasia who were heavy and moder ate smokers, in respect to controls (light smokers).…”

“…There are many reports that patients with lung cancer often display immune abnormalities, 1 – 10 , 13 , 14 , 18 ) and these abnormalities in cell mediated immunity have been considered to be significant in the development and progression of lung cancer 1 , 4 , 9 , 15 , 16 , 20 , 21 , 23 ) .…”

“…Regarding the number of lymphocytes and T cells in tumourbearing patients, there is much confusion in the literature. Some investigators report normal ranges of T lymphocytes (Wybran & Fudenberg, 1976;Middlekoop et al, 1976) whereas others find decreased numbers (Dellon et al, 1975;Roberts et al, 1977) mostly depending on technical variables. The suppression of neutrophil function in carcinoma patients, described by Bauim (I1975), was not confirmed in this study.…”
