Total Ship Operability –Review, Concept and Criteria

Abstract: The ship operability can be understood and analysed in different manners, and its quality is described using different indexes by different authors. Practically, there is no general and widely accepted description of total ship operability in the literature, nor in the rules of classification societies, which would include both seakeeping and manoeuvrability characteristics of a ship, and simultaneously take into account all ship subsystems and, what is most important, comfort and safety of people on board. Th… Show more

“…Early estimates of motions natural frequencies can be made for the three natural frequencies in roll, heave, and pitch based only upon the main characteristics and parameters of the vessel (DnV, 2010), and manoeuvrability acceptance is performed based on the criteria developed in (Barr et al, 1981). The seakeeping operability criteria have been analysed in (Nordenstrom, 1971, Hutchison, 1981, Naito et al, 2006, Ghaemi and Olszewski, 2017 and recently in (Garbatov et al, 2019).…”

“…Limiting values of selected operability criteria are shown in Table 4. Limiting values employed are universal for all ship types, except limiting values of the roll and the vertical acceleration at FP, which are specific for passenger ships [13]. Expressions for calculating operability criteria using response spectra and corresponding spectral moments are provided, e.g., in [18].…”

“…Therefore, a simplified but efficient approach for the calculation of wave-induced responses is used, employing closed-form expressions formulated by Jensen et al [12]. Seakeeping limiting values for operational criteria are taken specifically for the passenger ship [13].…”

“…The level of limit values is also dependent on the type and size of the ship. A summary of the criteria proposed by various researchers for selected seakeeping is provided in (Ghaemi and Olszewski, 2017, Karppinen, 1987and Lloyd, 1989.…”
