Total phenolic content, flavonoid concentration, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of methanol extracts from three Seseli L. taxa

Abstract: The present study describes the total phenolic content, concentrations of flavonoids and in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of methanol extracts from Seseli pallasii Besser, S. libanotis (L.) Koch ssp. libanotis and S. libanotis (L.) Koch ssp. intermedium (Rupr.) P. W. Ball, growing wild in Serbia. The total phenolic content in the extracts was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and their amounts ranged between 84.04 to 87.52 mg GA (gallic acid)/g. The concentrations of flavonoids in the ext… Show more

“…Based on the measured absorbance, the content of phenolics in the extracts was expressed in terms of the gallic acid (GA) equivalent (GAE) or mg of GA/g of extract. The flavonoid contents of the methanol, ethyl acetate and n-hexane extracts were determined by UV spectroscopy [33]. The sample contained 0.1 mL of the methanol solution of the extract at a concentration of 1 mg/mL, 0.41 mL 80% ethanol, and 0.01 mL and 0.1 mL of Al(NO 3 ) 3 x9H 2 O and CH 3 COOK each.…”

“…In case of S. annuum, germacrene, sabinene, ß-ocimene and limonene as main constituent was highly effective in inhibiting the growth of fungi [17], while according to Ozturk and Ercisli [19] trans-caryophyllene, ß-farnesene, eusarone and spathulenol were related to antimicrobial activity of S. libanotis essential oils. Several biological activities of the Seseli species were reported, including in vivo and in vitro anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities [12,16,21].…”

“…In general, plants phenolics that include a broad range of compounds such as various phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, and anthocyanins can protect plant cells against damage caused by ROS during, for example, drought or UV light irradiation stresses (Winkel‐Shirley ; Buer et al ; Pollastri and Tattini ). Furthermore, flavonoids play important roles in deterring herbivorous insect and in antimicrobial resistance as phytoalexins (Harborne and Williams ; Matejic et al ). As introduced, the presence of various flavonoids was also closely correlated with levels of freezing tolerance in plants, pointing to yet another protective role of flavonoids in plants.…”
