Total hip arthroplasty

Abstract: Total hip arthroplasty is most common reconstructive hip procedure in adults. In this surgery we replace some parts of the upper femur and acetabulum with biocompatible materials. The main goal of this surgery is to eliminate pain and regain full extent of joint motion, maintaining hip stability. Surgical technique, biomaterials, design of the prosthesis and fixation techniques have evolved with time adjusting to each other. After total hip arthroplasty patients' quality of life should be improved. There are m… Show more

“…Total hip arthroplasty is a widely utilized surgical treatment option for osteoarthritis of the hip, with good long-term outcomes 25,26,16,17,18,19,20,21,23 . However, few outcomes have been reported for patients undergoing THA with a lack of, or minimal, preoperative radiographic disease burden 23,24,25,26,27,28,29 . Our study is one of the largest databases of patients undergoing THA with minimal disease burden to our knowledge.…”

“…The major objectives of this operation are to retain hip stability while removing all discomfort and restoring complete range of motion to the joint. [2] The THA as it is known today was first developed in the 1930s utilizing metallic implants to replace bones and joints. [3] Although Wiles developed the first THA in 1938, it wasn't until Sir John Charnley from Wrightington Hospital introduced the "low-friction arthroplasty" in 1962.…”
