Total Hip Arthroplasty Performed in Patients with Residual Poliomyelitis: Does it Work?

Abstract: Background Patients with residual poliomyelitis can have advanced degenerative arthritis of the hip in the paralytic limb or the nonparalytic contralateral limb. Although THA is a treatment option for some of these patients, there are few studies regarding THA in this patient population. Questions/purposes We therefore reviewed a group of patients with residual poliomyelitis who underwent cementless THA on either their paralytic limb or nonparalytic limb to assess (1) Harris hip scores, (2) radiographic result… Show more

“…Four out of five patients were pain free at the end of followup and all considered that they were satisfied with the procedure, despite the complications experienced by some of them. These clinical results are comparable to those of the most recently published series by Yoon et al .,5 except for the fact that in their study only 30% of patients completely considered themselves pain free versus the rate of four out of five in the present study.…”

“…Given the small sample size in these series, it is difficult to find statistically significant differences in the correction of limb length discrepancy. In our series, this was considerably reduced in most cases (with a 13 mm median decrease), comparable to the degree of correction found in the series of paretic limbs of the article wrote by Yoon et al 5. of 14 mm.…”

“…Patients with Parkinson disease who underwent hip replacement overwhelmingly had good-to-excellent pain relief, although approximately one-third experienced a complication and 8% required a repeated operation. 11 In poliomyelitis, which, in contrast to MS, is a lower motor neuron disease, hip and knee replacement 12,13 resulted in universal pain relief and was associated with a very low rate of hip dislocations. In stroke, an upper motor neuron disease that can cause spastic hemiparesis-or paraparesis-like MS, no difference in mortality rates after arthroplasty were observed in patients older than 50 years compared with control patients of the same age.…”

“…Yoon et al berichten in der ersten grö-ßeren Studie zur Implantation einer zementfreien Hüftendoprothese über 10 Patienten mit Poliomyelitis, von denen 4 am paralytischen und 6 am nicht paralytischen Bein operiert wurden [22]. Innerhalb des durchschnittlichen Followup von 3 Jahren zeigte sich in dieser Serie keine Lockerung oder periprothetische Osteolyse.…”
