Total hip arthroplasty

Abstract: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a very satisfactory surgical procedure for end-stage hip disorders.Implant modifications, such as large femoral heads to improve stability, porous metals to enhance fixation and alternative bearings to improve wear, have been introduced over the last decade in order to decrease the rate of early and late failures. There is a changing pattern of THA failure modes. The relationship between failure modes and patient-related factors, and the time and type of revision are important for… Show more

“…The main factor limiting long-term THA survival is wear debris production from bearing surfaces ( 4 ). Femoral head wear has so far been described only in revision surgery with metal-on-polyethylene bearing after a primary ceramic-on-ceramic THA, when it was caused by ceramic particles embedded in the acetabular liner ( 3 ).…”

“…8 Most common agent of peri-prosthetic infection is Staphylococcus aureus, followed by coagulasenegative Staphylococcus and Streptococcus for total knee replacement. 1,3,9 Delayed infections may present with subtler symptoms which are for example joint pain and early loosening. These are caused by low-virulent organisms (coagulase-negative staphylococci or Cutibacterium species).…”

“…1,2 They have excellent and satisfactory outcome with long survivorship, at least 90% over 10 years. 1,3 The number of total arthroplasty performance has been projected to increase even further in the next 10 to 15 years. 5 These operations are very effective for pain relief, functional restoration and improved quality of life in patients especially suffering from osteoarthritis or inflammatory arthritis of the hip.…”
