Total evidence phylogeny and the evolution of adult bioluminescence in fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae)

Abstract: Fireflies are some of the most captivating organisms on the planet. They have a rich history as subjects of scientific study, especially in relation to their bioluminescent behavior. Yet, the phylogenetic relationships of fireflies are still poorly understood. Here, we present the first total evidence approach to reconstruct lampyrid phylogeny using both a molecular matrix from six loci and an extensive morphological matrix. Using this phylogeny we test the hypothesis that adult bioluminescence evolved after t… Show more

“…Although Lamprigera was originally placed in Lampyrinae in traditional taxonomy (4), it was recently suggested to be placed in the Lampyridae Incerte sedis (15). Our results were also supported by morphological and molecular data (13)(14)(15). It is noted that incongruence for the phylogenetic position of Lamprigera was observed in NJ and ML/BI trees.…”

“…Molecular analyses have suggested that the origin of Lampyridae was dated back to late Jurassic (156) or mid-Cretaceous periods (202). Luciolinae and Lampyrinae was diverged at the basal position of the Lampyridae (203) and the fossil of the Luciolinae firefly dated at Cretaceous period was discovered in Burmese amber (204,205). Taken together, the divergence of Luciola and Lampyridae is dated back at least 100 Mya.…”
