Total daily energy expenditure and activity level in anorexia nervosa

Abstract: Clinical reports consistently comment on high physical activity for anorexia nervosa patients but provide few quantitative measurements. To assess activity, total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) by doubly labeled water, basal metabolic rate (BMR), and thermic effect of meals (TEM) were measured in six female outpatients with anorexia nervosa (67% of ideal body weight) and age-, sex-, and height-matched to six control subjects. Anorexia nervosa patients expended more energy as physical activity than did control… Show more

“…The drive for activity allows some individuals with AN to engage in excessive exercise. Higher than normal activity levels in AN have been confirmed experimentally (Casper et al 1991;Klein et al 2007;Pirke et al 1991). We have suggested that the drive for activity, restlessness, and the mental alertness during the starvation state represent core symptoms of AN and, therefore, ought to be included as diagnostic criteria (Casper 2006).…”

“…Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric disorder and is often characterized by extreme hypophagia, obsessive fears of being fat and hyperactivity (Casper et al, 1991;Kron et al, 1978;Walsh and Devlin, 1998). The mechanisms underlying the development of AN are poorly understood.…”

“…Patients frequently show excessive exercising and can not avoid being active [1,2]. The activity-based anorexia (ABA) model is used to study anorectic behavior in rodents and serves as an animal model of anorexia nervosa.…”
