Total antioxidant capacity in Mediterranean β-thalassemic patients

Abstract: Background. Beta thalassemia major (BT) is an inherited blood disorder caused by reduced or absent synthesis of the hemoglobin beta chains, associated with profound anemia, jaundice, splenomegaly, expanded bone marrow volume, siderosis and cardiomegaly. Because of repeated blood transfusions, BT patients are subjected to peroxidative tissue injury due to secondary iron overload.

“…Besides this, Karakas et al reported that TAC was significantly increased in β-TM and β-TI [16]. It must be pointed out that another study showed decreased levels of TAC in Italian and Greek βT patients [5]. A possible explanation for this difference could be the different age ranges (41.5 ± 9.5 years) and/or different medications.…”

“…Indirect bilirubin and uric acid are the main endogenous antioxidants, while both Vitamin E and ascorbic acid are important exogenous antioxidants. These antioxidants counteract the toxic effects of oxidative stress [5]. Different studies have evaluated oxidative stress biomarkers in various disorders, along with hemolytic anemia [5], [6], [7], [8], [9].…”

“…Antioxidant activity was assayed spectrophotometrically, as previously described 14 using a TAC Kit (Total Antioxidant Capacity Colorimetric assay kit, produced by Cayman Chemical Co., Ann Arbor, USA) with the TEAC method in the clinical chemistry laboratory of the Alexander Technological Educational Institute, Thessaloniki, Greece.…”

“…The term 'oxidative stress biomarker' has been defined by the National Institute of Health as "a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of pathogenic processes, or pharmacological responses to a therapeutic intervention 5 . Several studies have evaluated oxidative stress (OS) biomarkers 6 for various disorders such as diabetes 7 , malaria [8][9][10] , heart 11 and neurodegenerative diseases 12,13 , along with hemolytic 14,15 and neoplastic disorders. The last of which includes hematological malignancies, a diverse group of blood cancers with various etiology, incidence, prognosis, and survival.…”
