Total anthocyanin, flavonoid, polyphenol and tannin contents of seven pomegranate cultivars grown in Iran

Abstract: Background. Pomegranates are healthy fruits rich in bioactive phytochemicals and widely consumed in the human diet. This study was designed to assess their physico-chemical properties and total polyphenolic compounds, along with antioxidant and ascorbic acid concentrations of the skin and juice of seven unstudied pomegranate cultivars grown in Iran. Materials and methods. Ten fruits of each of seven selected cultivars were picked. Methanolic extracts from the fruit skins as well as juices were subjected to an … Show more

“…It is well known that pomegranates are rich in bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity, such as phenolic compounds, including anthocyanins and ascorbic acid. Although the concentration at time of harvest is affected by several factors, such as cultivars, ripening stage and environmental conditions . In pomegranate arils, loss of ascorbic acid occurred during storage (Table ) according to previous reports in ‘Ganesh’, ‘Wonderful’ and ‘Malas’ cultivars.…”

“…Production of this cultivar is safeguarded by a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) since 2016 . However, its arils have a pale pink colour because they have lower anthocyanin content than other Spanish cultivars, such as ‘White’, ‘CG8’, ‘Katirbasi’ or ‘Wonderful’ or other Tunisian, Turkish or Iranian cultivars which depreciates its value in international markets.…”

“…The spectroscopic determination of total flavonoid in the crude extract was carried out following the method earlier described by Mottaghipisheh et al (2018). Briefly, 150 μL of the sample was incubated at room temperature for 5 min.…”

“…Anthocyanins are the major class of water-soluble pigments found in plants, and belong to the flavonoid polyphenols [7]. The metabolic pathway of anthocyanin is relatively well documented in model plants [8,9].…”
