Total ankle replacement in moderate to severe varus deformity of the ankle

Abstract: Our study describes the clinical outcome of total ankle replacement (TAR) performed in patients with moderate to severe varus deformity. Between September 2004 and September 2007, 23 ankles with a varus deformity > or = 10 degrees and 22 with neutral alignment received a TAR. Following specific algorithms according to joint congruency, the varus ankles were managed by various additional procedures simultaneously with TAR. After a mean follow-up of 27 months (12 to 47), the varus ankles improved significantly i… Show more

“…As reported by Kim et al [16], heterotopic ossifications were seen in 24% of patients who underwent implantation of an HINTEGRA 1 prosthesis, most commonly at the posterior aspect. However, they did not affect the VAS, AOFAS score, or ROM [16]. In the study by Wood and Deakin [40], reviewing results for 200 STAR replaced ankles, heterotopic bone formation appeared radiographically in 47% of the ankles.…”

“…26 The FADI asks 26 questions about activities of daily living and has previously been reported in an ankle arthritis population. 15 The SMFA is a 46-item questionnaire divided into the Dysfunction (or Function) index, which assesses patient function, and the Bother index, which evaluates how much patients are bothered by functional limitations; the metric has been validated for use in patients with musculoskeletal disease or injury. 26 …”
