Total Ankle Replacement

Abstract: SUMMARYBackground: About 1% of adults suffer from painful osteoarthritis of the ankle. The current literature contains no information on the percentage of such patients who derive long-term relief of symptoms from conservative treatment. Advanced ankle osteoarthritis can be treated with non-joint-preserving measures, such as total ankle replacement and ankle fusion.

“…All available clinical studies reporting TAR outcomes in patients with bleeding disorders have demonstrated significant pain relief [65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][76][77][78]80,81]. Most studies reported improved functionality, including increased ankle range of motion, postoperatively [65][66][67][68]72,75,76,79,80,82]. However, the observed increase in range of motion was overall very low with an average of <10° (Table 3).…”

“…Barg et al performed imaging immediately postoperatively, at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and annually thereafter. 96 Lee et al performed radiography immediately postoperatively, at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and then annually. 97 Immediate postoperative anteroposterior (AP) and lateral radiographs are helpful in determining whether the bones and orthopaedic implants are in expected alignment.…”
