Total Absorption Spectroscopy Study ofRb92Decay: A Major Contributor to Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum Shape

Abstract: The antineutrino spectra measured in recent experiments at reactors are inconsistent with calculations based on the conversion of integral beta spectra recorded at the ILL reactor. 92 Rb makes the dominant contribution to the reactor antineutrino spectrum in the 5-8 MeV range but its decay properties are in question. We have studied 92 Rb decay with total absorption spectroscopy. Previously unobserved beta feeding was seen in the 4.5-5.5 region and the GS to GS feeding was found to be 87.5(25)%. The impact on… Show more

“…However in this case the shape of the observed spectrum [11][12][13][14] is in disagreement with the theoretical predictions. It is more difficult for sterile neutrinos to explain this spectral deformation, and so many authors have instead argued that it results from a fault in the calculations of the theoretical spectra [15,16]. Consistent with this interpretation of the deficit is recent evidence from Daya Bay that the contributions of the primary fission isotopes to the deficit are not proportional to their abundances [17].…”

“…The shaded bands represent the 1σ uncertainties in their contributions according to their tabulated uncertainties in fission yields and relative decay probabilities. Recent total absorption gamma spectroscopy measurements [28] suggest the 92 Rb contribution is at the high end of the rather large uncertainty shown here, further enhancing the prediction of a shoulder.…”

“…On this topic, a body of nuclear structure measurements exist which have not yet been incorporated into the publicly-available nuclear databases [28,29,30,31]. Recent work to incorporate these measurements suggest corrections which both enhance and diminish the ν e spectrum above 6.5 MeV.…”
