‘TORUS’: a slotless, toroidal-stator, permanent-magnet generator

Abstract: TORUS is a compact electrical machine particularly suitable for use as an engine-driven generator and which, when supplied via suitable switching circuits, can operate as a brushless D C motor to start the engine. The machine is of simple and cheap construction and gives high efficiency. The use of Neodymium-Iron-Boron permanent magnets gives good utilisation and small overall size and weight. Several 2.5 kW prototype machines have been built and tested, and have demonstrated all aspects of performance and cap… Show more

“…They all have a lower cogging torque and make less noise while operating. Given the absence of core losses, a coreless-stator AFPMG machine operates at a higher efficiency than a conventional machine, regardless of the rotational speed [18][19][20]. In addition, the machine can be made smaller and is cheaper to manufacture.…”

“…Additionally, the section on copper losses adapts a Ferreira's equation to calculate eddy-current losses in the air-gap conductors of a slotless machine and correlates that expression to a simplified formula reported in literature (e.g. [90]). This study is one of the thesis' contributions.…”

“…In a modern industrialized country, electric machines consume nearly about 65% of the generated electrical energy and cover industry, domestic appliance, aerospace, military, automobiles, renewable energy developments, etc. [32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39].…”
