Torsional vibration measurement of the viscosity of a metallic melt

Abstract: The liquid Co 91 B 9 alloy is used as an example to study the influence of boundary conditions at the upper melt boundary on the results of viscosity measurements using torsional vibrations. Specific features related to film effects and wetting phenomena are shown to appear in the temperature dependence of logarithmic decrement. To exclude the influence of these effects and phenomena, viscosity measurements should be performed under the experimental conditions where the melt to be studied is in closed volume a… Show more

“…The determination by the torsional vibration method is based on measuring the vibration damping factor δ. A number of models and programs is designed to calculate ν from the known δ [1]. The main task of recomputing δ into ν is in comparing samples with various masses, geometries, and densities.…”

“…A standard method to record torsional vibrations of a hanger is observation the path of the light beam reflected from the oscillating suspended system [1][2][3][4][5], and the vibration speed is estimated [5] by measuring a time of passage a fixed section l by the light beam (see the Figure 1.) in the vicinity of the equilibrium position of the suspended system, which is much smaller than amplitude of vibrations A i .…”
