Torsional irregularity in multi-story structures

Abstract: The purpose of this study is first to determine the conditions for excessive torsional irregularity and then to discuss the validity of code provisions. A parametric investigation is performed on six groups of typical structures with varying shear wall positions, story, and axis numbers. It is found that torsional irregularity coefficients increase as the story numbers decrease, i.e., maximum irregularity coefficients occur for single-story structures. They reach maximum values when the asymmetrical shear wall… Show more

“…Figure 6 (a) shows that the torsional diaphragm rotation slightly changes along the height of the building reaching a maximum value at the top level, which is also the same conclusion made by Özmen et al in their study [14]. The maximum torsional rotation response demands are: 0.0005, 0.0000800, 0.00025,0.0005380, 0.0004700, 0.0016170 radian for IRML1-IRM L6 respectively.…”

“…The structure with special shaped columns is extensively used in the field of the structural engineering because of the benefit of saving indoor space and suitable arrangement for the furniture. Ozmen, et al (2014) has studied the analysis performed on 6 similar plan layouts of building with the various positions of the shear walls and for same storey height. From result it was noted that when shear was placed near the center of the high rise structure gives better performance compared to other cases.…”
