Torsional balance of plan‐asymmetric structures with frictional dampers: experimental results

Abstract: SUMMARYThis investigation deals with the measured seismic response of a six-storey asymmetric structural model with frictional dampers. Its main objective is to experimentally prove the concept of weak torsional balance for mass-and stiffness-eccentric model configurations. The goal is to control the torsional response of these asymmetric structures and to achieve, if possible, a weak form of torsional balance by placing the so-called empirical centre of balance (ECB) of the structure at equal distance from th… Show more

“…Furthermore, response reduction factors are for most cases larger than 1, which implies that the use of FD in the structure simultaneously reduces the displacement demand at both edges of the plan. Results for other more exible structures as well as with other damper capacities follow similar trends [19].…”

“…It is interesting to note from this figure that Criteria A and B lead exactly to the same optimal damper eccentricity. Thus, we have shown experimentally [8] that a minimum of the standard deviation of the maximum lateral displacement in plan occurs when both building edges attain the same value for the standard deviation of their displacements (torsional balance). The normalized standard deviation curves of the lateral displacements of the same structures considered above with e s = 0.2b are shown in Figure 11.…”

“…Because previous articles have shown specific applications of the concept, the emphasis of this article is in the theory of WTB [7][8][9], which may be applied as a design criterion of SD in single and multistory structures, linear or inelastic. This criterion is intended to produce more uniform displacement demand on different resisting planes in plan by modifying the correlation of the lateral and torsional motions.…”

“…Parametric studies determined optimal positions of employed friction isolation devices. Later, analytical and experimental studies [14,15] investigated frictional dampers as a means to improve response of asymmetric structures. A so-called weak torsional-balance approach is proposed where the goal of the controlling algorithm is to equalize damage in the structure incited by torsional responses.…”
