Torque Teno Virus in Children Who Underwent Orthotopic Liver Transplantation: New Insights About a Common Pathogen

Abstract: TTV infection is widespread, and its replication is closely related to immune status and viral coinfection. High TTV viremia is not associated with hepatitis after OLT, but, conversely, liver inflammatory activity impairs TTV replication.

“…Anelloviruses have been proposed to serve as biomarkers of functional immunocompetence because changes in anellovirus load in the sera have been associated with immunosuppression levels in transplant recipients 20,21 . Additionally, anelloviruses have been frequently detected by PCR in the serum of infants 42 .…”

“…Anelloviruses, first characterized in 1997 (53), have been reported in a high proportion of human adults (54,55), where they show a very high level of genetic diversity (56)(57)(58). Anelloviruses are under immunological control, since induced or inborn immunodeficiency is associated with increases in viral loads (59)(60)(61)(62)(63).…”
