Torque control of bolt tightening process through adaptive-gain second-order sliding mode

Abstract: Bolts constitute a very important subset of mechanical fasteners. In order to tighten bolts, a degree of bolt preload scatter is to be expected. Since the torque control of tightening bolts is the most popular means of controlling the preload, an appropriate tightening torque becomes pivotal. This paper investigates the torque control problem of bolt tightening process. This process is not as simple as it looks because the inherently nonlinear process contains many uncertainties. To conquer the advers… Show more

“…An adaptive-gain second-order sliding mode controller (SMC) design was suggested to gain the required pre-load. The results were dramatically improved by applying an adaptive-again algorithm because the second-order SMC's sliding-surface parameters were the same as the specified control method [76]. It is further suggested to use an algorithm for a multi-bolt tightening technique that considers elastic interaction and gasket creep relaxation.…”

“…Thus, the scatters of nut factors could be decreased. Wu et al [19] designed an adaptive-gain second-order sliding mode controller to conquer the adverse effects of the uncertainties during the torque control of bolt tightening process. Zhang et al [20] proposed an improved torque method based on a mathematical model for preload control in the precision assembly of miniature bolt joints.…”

“…Saman 14 took the nut dilation effect into consideration and proposed a novel 3D formulation for torque preload relationship for improving the tightening quality. What’s more, the neural networks, 15 fuzzy logical control, 16 and adaptive sliding control 17 are also used to improve the single bolt tightening quality.…”
