Toric phakic intraocular lens for the correction of hyperopia and astigmatism

Abstract: Artisan toric pIOLs can correct moderate to high hyperopia combined with astigmatism with good refractive results. In this study, there were no serious complications. However, the predictability of the refractive results appeared to be lower than those in the correction of myopia and astigmatism with toric Artisan lenses.

“…12,[16][17][18] In our study, 82% of the eyes were within G0.50 D of the attempted SE correction and 76% were within G1.00 D of attempted cylinder correction, which is comparable to the results of iris-claw pIOLs in nonkeratoconic eyes. 44,45 Alfonso et al 14 report similar SE results with posterior chamber Implantable Collamer Lens pIOLs, with 84% of eyes being within G0.50 D. Cylinder results were slightly better than in our series; that is, all eyes in the Alfonso et al study were within G1.00 D. However, all their patients had a refractive cylinder less than À3.00 D.…”

“…Endothelial cell loss results in phakic eyes without PKP vary in the literature. Pop and Payette, 20 who studied the Artisan-Verisyse IOL for refractive surgery in phakic patients, and Bartels et al, 21 who performed a prospective study of 47 eyes with a toric phakic IOL for hyperopia and astigmatism, report no significant endothelial cell loss 1 year after surgery.…”

“…Toric pIOL implant patients do not suffer from the disadvantages associated with corneal refractive surgery, and ametropia combined with astigmatism can be successfully corrected. [6][7][8][9][10][11] Several types of pIOLs, including angle-supported pIOLs, iris-fixated pIOLs, and posterior chamber pIOLs, are available. Recently, the latter two types of pIOLs have become increasingly popular.…”
