We study the dynamics of axions at first-order phase transitions in non-Abelian gauge theories. When the duration of the phase transition is short compared to the timescale of the axion oscillations, the axion dynamics is similar to the trapped misalignment mechanism. On the other hand, if this is not the case, the axions are initially expelled from the inside of the bubbles, generating axion waves on the outside. Analogous to the Fermi acceleration, these axions gain energy by repeatedly scattering off the bubble walls. Once they acquire enough energy, they can enter the bubbles. If the axion oscillations are relevant only inside the bubbles during the phase transition, the axion abundance is significantly enhanced compared to models where the axion mass is either constant or varies continuously as a function of temperature. The increase in axion abundance depends on the axion mass, the duration of the phase transition, and the bubble wall velocity. This mechanism results in a spatially inhomogeneous distribution of axions, which could lead to the formation of axion miniclusters. It has potential implications for the formation of oscillons/I-balls, axion warm dark matter, cosmic birefringence, and the production of dark photons.

We investigate, by means of numerical lattice simulations, the θ-dependence of the critical deconfinement temperature of SU(N) gauge theories at large N : Tc(θ) = Tc(0)[1 – Rθ2 + O(θ4)], with R ~ O(1/N2). We follow two different strategies to determine R, one based on the calculation of the latent heat of the transition and on the jump of the topological susceptibility at the θ = 0 critical point, the other relying on a direct probe of Tc(θ) by means of imaginary-θ Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that R follows the expected large-N scaling.

We apply the previously-developed sub-volume method to study the θ-dependence of the four-dimensional SU(2) Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature. We calculate the first two coefficients, the topological susceptibility χ and the fourth cumulant b2, in the θ-expansion of the free energy density around the critical temperature (Tc) for the confinement-deconfinement transition. Lattice calculations are performed with three different spatial sizes 243, 323, 483 to monitor finite size effects, while the temporal size is fixed to be 8. The systematic uncertainty associated with the sub-volume extrapolation is studied with special care. The sub-volume method allows us to determine the values of b2 much more accurately than the standard full-volume method, and we successfully identify the temperature dependence of b2 around Tc. Our numerical results suggest that the θ-dependence of the free energy density near θ = 0 changes from 4χ(1 − cos(θ/2)) to χ(1 − cos θ) as the temperature crosses Tc.
