Topiramate-induced macular neurosensory retinal detachment

Abstract: PurposeTo present a previously unreported retinal side-effect from topiramate use in two cases.ObservationsMacular neurosensory retinal detachments were seen in two patients shortly after beginning oral topiramate. The macular detachments resolved shortly after discontinuing this medication. Conclusions and importanceAs these two cases represent the first reports of topiramate-induced macular neurosensory retinal detachment, clinicians should be aware of this potential ocular side effect when administering this… Show more

“…In our case, neurosensory retinal detachment may be related to topiramate as there was diffuse choroidal thickening (including post pole) as well as earlier reports of the same, 7 though our fluorescein angiographic features were different from those reported in the literature. The angiographic and optical coherence tomographic features were typical of CSCR, which may have been induced by topiramate.…”

“…The subfoveal fluid resolved on the discontinuation of topiramate. This lady had received neither steroids nor laser peripheral iridotomy, 7 possibly denoting a causative association of topiramate with the subfoveal fluid.…”
