TopicalPdb: A database of topically delivered peptides

Abstract: TopicalPdb (http://crdd.osdd.net/raghava/topicalpdb/) is a repository of experimentally verified topically delivered peptides. Data was manually collected from research articles. The current release of TopicalPdb consists of 657 entries, which includes peptides delivered through the skin (462 entries), eye (173 entries), and nose (22 entries). Each entry provides comprehensive information related to these peptides like the source of origin, nature of peptide, length, N- and C-terminal modifications, mechanism … Show more

“…[ 189 ] Several hundred peptides that enhance the skin permeability of drugs are collated in the database TopicalPdb. [ 190 ] AMong the reported sequences, arginine and lysine combined with lipophilic natural and unnatural amino acids are found extensively. Chemical modifications of peptides, such as the addition of lipophilic moieties, have also been shown to increase stability and skin permeability.…”

“…The technological advances have led to the revival of interest of the pharmaceutical industry in peptide-based therapeutics [ 1 ]. Peptides show diverse therapeutic properties [ 2 , 3 ] like anticancer [ 4 ], antimicrobial [ 5 , 6 ], antiparasitic [ 7 ], cell penetrating [ 8 , 9 ], antihypertensive [ 10 ], tumor homing [ 11 ]. The peptides have a number of advantages over small molecule-based drugs that include high specificity and low side effects [ 1 , 12 ].…”

“…For example, topical use of an ECM protein-derived tetrapeptide PKEK boosts formation of ECM and also modulates skin pigmentation resulting in skin whitening effects[108] [109]. As of today, a public database, the TopicalPdb (http://crdd.osdd.net/raghava/topicalpdb/) has currently included 657 entries for the peptides that can be topically delivered[110].…”
