Topical treatment of psoriasis vulgaris

Abstract: Summary Topical therapy plays an important role in the treatment of psoriasis. It is the gold standard in mild psoriasis cases and is also recommended in addition to UV and systemic therapy in cases of moderate to severe psoriasis. In this overview article we summarize the current therapeutic options, taking into account special localizations (scalp, facial, intertriginous/genital, or palmoplantar lesions) and situations (hyperkeratotic or inflammatory forms), as well as the therapy options during pregnancy an… Show more

“…On the other hand, one role of vitamin D at the skin level is the inhibition of keratinocyte proliferation [ 12 ], knowing that skin lesions in PV are partially due to keratinocyte hyperproliferation and abnormal differentiation [ 13 ]. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with the pathogenesis of PV [ 14 ] and topical treatment with vitamin D analogs has been extensively used in PV [ 15 ]. In addition, vitamin E, a potent antioxidant, was found to be deficient in patients with PV compared to healthy subjects [ 16 ].…”

“…The treatment of psoriasis depends on various factors, such as the severity of the disease, its location, and any accompanying conditions. Topical therapy, involving the use of corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs (such as calcipotriene, calcitriol and tacalcitol), retinoids (such as tazarotene and tazarotene), anthralin and topical immunomodulators as calcineurin inhibitors, is the preferred treatment for patients with mild psoriasis [ 7 ]. Psoriasis is a common skin condition that can cause dry and irritated skin.…”

“…The choice of treatment for psoriasis depends on several factors, including location, the severity of the disease, and whether it is accompanied by other diseases [ 5 ]. Topical therapy involving corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, tapinarof, and calcineurin inhibitors is the gold standard for patients with mild psoriasis [ 6 ]. Oral systemic therapies are the conventional treatment options for patients with moderate to severe psoriasis, with oral systemic agents such as methotrexate, acitretin, ciclosporin, dimethyl fumarate, apremilast, and tofacitinib [ 7 ].…”
