Topical sodium alendronate combined or not with photodynamic therapy as an adjunct to scaling and root planing: Histochemical and immunohistochemical study in rats

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate influence of topical sodium alendronate (ALN), photodynamic therapy (aPDT), or a combination thereof as adjuvant to scaling and root planing (SRP) in the treatment of experimental periodontitis in rats. Background: Therapeutic protocols to control periodontitis progression that aim to equalize bacterial action and load with tissue immune response are well addressed in current scientific research. Methods: Experimental periodontitis was induced in 96 rats wit… Show more

“…On the other hand, the oral administration of alendronate to treat osteoporosis has shown to have a 0% to 0.4% chance of inducing ONJ [ 88 ]. Consequently, several studies have investigated the beneficial effects of alendronate administration to manage experimental periodontitis in rats [ 35 , 37 , 89 , 90 ] and PD in clinical trials [ 91 93 ]. Some of the described studies are described in table 2 .…”

“…Surgical procedures may be necessary to help control the disease, prevent apical epithelial migration, bone neoformation and reinsertion of periodontal ligament fibers. 1,4,5 Despite these efforts, the search for therapies and approaches that can accelerate and improve the repair process has been the target…”

“…Furthermore, such therapeutic resources provide pain reduction and edema regression, through the release of low energy to a target cell to stimulate its membranes and organelles, leading to active photobiomodulation. 6,7 The effects of laser therapy on common types of pathologies have recently been evaluated by some researchers. Its analgesic function is through the minimization of histamine, prostaglandin, increased serotonin, acetylcholine, bringing significant results in the pain threshold of treated patients.…”
