Topical Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs for Ophthalmic Use

Abstract: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used agents that despite chemically heterogeneity, share similar therapeutic properties and adverse effects. Topical ophthalmic NSAIDs are limited to the relatively water soluble phenylacetic and phenylalkanoic acids as well as indole derivatives, which are more suitable for ophthalmic use. Topical ophthalmic NSAIDs are commonly used in the treatment of post-operative inflammation following cataract extraction and various surgical refractive procedures. … Show more

“…Acetaminophen was also the most commonly (83.8%) prescribed analgesic for patients with asthma followed by ibuprofen (6.3%), mefenamic acid (5%) and aspirin (5%) with lower frequencies. According to Gaynes et al, NSAIDs are not used in patients with asthma due to their side effects and complications except for acetaminophen, which has fewer side effects (33). In our study, the most commonly administered analgesic among asthmatics was acetaminophen, which is the correct choice for patients with asthma.…”

“…NSAIDs cause inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis and release by inhibiting the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin via the cyclooxygenase pathway. 5 NSAIDs also suppress polymorphonuclear cell ability to move and chemotaxis in addition to decreasing expression of inflammatory cytokines and mast cell degranulation. 6 Moreover, they also inhibit intraoperative miosis during cataract surgery, which decreases the risk of iris damage and intraoperative complications.…”

“…Indiscriminate use of topical antibiotics and NSAIDS leads to histological and structural changes in conjunctiva. 10,11 Studies in ophthalmology in India literature have also raised issues of poor selection and prescribing of essential drugs and generic medicines. [6][7][8][9]12,13 Keeping these facts in consideration, the present study was conducted to obtain data on the current prescribing pattern and drug utilisation trend of ophthalmologist at a tertiary care hospital with ultimate goal to promote rational use of drugs among prescribers.…”
