Topical Niosome Gel of Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. Extract for Anti-inflammatory Activity Enhanced Skin Permeation and Stability of Compound D

Abstract: Abstract. An extract of Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. (ZC) was encapsulated in niosomes of which a topical gel was formed. (E)-4-(3′,4′-dimethoxyphenyl)but-3-en-1-ol or compound D detected by a gradient HPLC was employed as the marker and its degradation determined to follow zero-order kinetics. Niosomes significantly retarded thermal-accelerated decomposition of compound D in the gel (p<0.05) but did not change the activation energy of compound D. Niosomes enhanced in vitro permeation rate of compound D from the … Show more

“…Many commercial products containing cassumunar ginger oil for muscle pain relief are available on the market. The characteristic pleasant odor with earthy, camphoraceous features and relaxation property also makes the cassumunar ginger oil being of interest among aroma-therapists for Thai massage and spa applications (21). However, the cassumunar ginger oil sold in the market is generally extracted by using conventional methods (hydro-and steam distillation) (information obtained from factory visits).…”

“…In the most interest of the anti-inflammatory activity, attempts have recently been made to derive this cassumunar ginger oil to formulate the tropical preparations for local and systemic administrations. The topical and the transdermal deliveries of cassumunar ginger oil have been successfully developed by microemulsion, gels and patches [6,[22][23][24]. Development of pharmaceutical products from cassumunar ginger oil are extensively growing, while the research on their toxicity is still limited.…”

“…(E)-4-(3ʹ,4ʹ-dimethoxyphenyl)but-3-en-1-ol (also known as compound D) is the active compound isolated from Z. cassumunar. Encapsulation of compound D in niosomes enhanced its chemical stability and skin permeation with anti-inflammatory effects comparable to commercial anti-inflammatory drugs when applied on the skin of mice [90]. Z. cassumunar-encapsulated niosomes were also effective for local subcutaneous inflammation when used in combination with therapeutic ultrasound [91].…”
