Topical melatonin in combination with vitamins E and C protects skin from ultraviolet-induced erythema: a human studyin vivo

Abstract: In this randomized, double-blind human study, the short-term photoprotective effects of different antioxidants and their combinations were evaluated in vivo. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) and melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) were topically applied, alone or in combination, 30 min before ultraviolet-irradiation of the skin. The erythemal reaction was evaluated visually and non-invasively using different bioengineering methods (skin colour and skin blood flow). The results showe… Show more

“…This is in agreement with the report of Thal6n et al [54] who studied melatonin as a marker of circadian rhythm and the effect of bright light on melatonin in 63 depressed patients, 42 The effect of bright light on cortisol and the relationship between melatonin and cortisol were also studied in the same 63 depressed patients [55]. Patients Slotten and Krekling [49] [15]. In their randomized, double-blind human study, the short-term photoprotective effects of different antioxidants and their combinations were evaluated in vivo.…”

“…Essa proteção fornecida devida ao tocoferol e carotenóides tem sido, também, observada em tecido epidérmico humano. Importantes resultados têm sido obtidos com os tocoferóis na prevenção de doenças cardiovasculares e no tratamento de cataratas oftalmológicas [14][15][16][17] . As formas mais comuns de tocoferóis, encontradas na natureza e já estudadas, são o álcool livre e a acetilada, possivelmente devido à metodologia analítica empre-gada.…”

“…Under physiologic conditions, melatonin participates in the regulation of keratinocyte proliferation (24)(25)(26), hair growth (26)(27)(28)(29)(30)(31) and melanogenesis (32,33). In conditions of oxidative stress, it acts as an antioxidant (18,(34)(35)(36) and UV-protective substance (18,22,37,38). These actions may result in protective, proliferative and antiapoptotic effects to ensure the survival of non-neoplastic cells.…”
