Top down electroweak dipole operators

Abstract: We derive present constraints on, and prospective sensitivity to, the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the top quark (dt) implied by searches for the EDMs of the electron and nucleons. Above the electroweak scale v, the dt arises from two gauge invariant operators generated at a scale Λ v that also mix with the light fermion EDMs under renormalization group evolution at two-loop order. Bounds on the EDMs of first generation fermion systems thus imply bounds on |dt|. Working in the leading log-squared approximat… Show more

“…Chien et al (2016) investigated the constraints on dimension-six operators that couple the Higgs boson to quarks and gluons, and found that the impact of hadronic and nuclear physics uncertainties is pronounced. Cirigliano et al (2016a,b) and Fuyuto and Ramsey-Musolf (2018) considered the constraints on the top quark EDM from d e and find that the bounds are three orders of magnitude stronger than obtained from other sources.…”

“…Particularly notable is that the limits on the scalar quark-pseudoscalar electron interaction may place a lower bound on the mass scale Λ of roughly 10 3 TeV or more. This has been applied in the context of leptoquark models by Fuyuto et al (2018).…”

“…[19] for an analysis of the singlet-extended SM. Furthermore, EDM constraints on dimension-six CP-violating (CPV) operators potentially relevant for EWBG are typically in the multi-TeV range [22][23][24][25]. This difference in scale can be accommodated by assuming a different threshold for the CPV dimension-six operators such that Λ CP > Λ [16].…”

“…The processes that have been considered include top pair production [6][7][8][9][10], top decay [11,12], and top production in association with a Higgs [13,14] a Z or γ [8,14,15], or b quarks [16]. There have also been studies using low energy observables [17][18][19][20][21] as well as future lepton colliders [22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. In addition, there are several groups, TopFitter [29][30][31], SMEFiT [32], and SFitter [33] that have performed global fits to data to constrain the space of EFT operators coupling to tops.…”
